A Day in the Life of a Compliance Officer

Communicating the Code of Business Ethics

Introducing Munirah, who is well-known for her calm demeanour and zest for upholding orderliness in her work as the Head of Finance for a property developer. She was nominated by the Board of Directors of her organization as Compliance Officer and was instrumental in introducing the corporate Code of Business Ethics (the “Code”) earlier this month. The senior management team as a whole, has communicated the launch of the Code and Munirah’s appointment as the Compliance Officer.

At 9:30am today, she was scheduled to provide her maiden training to the organization’s 43 employees on the Code.

“Best to do training in the morning…Everyone’s more attentive before lunch!”, Munirah joked.

She has emailed everyone beforehand the digital handouts of her training material, encouraging everyone to read and come prepared with questions for her at training. This way, she thought, “…fosters camaraderie”.

During the 2-hour training, many employees were attentive, some others were concerned. But a common thread was established – everyone agrees that they own the Code and will be accountable for their own ethics and conduct.

Munirah was thrilled with their enthusiasm to participate, learn and clarify concerns. After recording the employees’ attendance, she will be preparing the FAQs that were raised during the training session. She hopes to email the employees by the end of the week – also congratulating everyone how they have exceeded her expectations on embracing the Code.

Munirah plans to ride the waves on the employees’ newly acquired knowledge of the organization’s compliance program and will be engaging the senior management team to liberally talk about the compliance program at all the meetings they will attend in the next few weeks.

As for the rest of the today, Munirah carries on with her responsibilities in the Finance Department.
